CBS Mornings recently reported on Brookhaven, Georgia’s Police Department’s ground breaking drone program, illustrating how drones can be used by law enforcement.
But what does it really take to implement a drone program that protects civil liberties?
A city council voting on policy and a police department building a program are the final steps in such a program.
From a department’s hope to post launch of the program, Chris Balch worked with The City of Brookhaven to develop best practices and model policies for the deployment of drone systems for use by the Brookhaven Police Department. Balancing the narrow space between citizen privacy and reasonable law enforcement, they established a program that complies with Federal law, assists law enforcement and prosecutors, and respects the rights of citizens to privacy in their own spaces.
